DEFRA have recently announced a change to the regulation of small waste oil burners (SWOBs). From 1st April 2016 burning waste oil will require a new permit under Schedule 13A of the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010.
The changes will mean that anyone wishing to use Small Waste Oil Burners will have to comply with the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) which includes requirements to gain a permit from their Local Authority.
The permit, necessary monitoring and emission limits will likely be cost prohibitive with the application fee and annual costs being up to £5k before any cost for emission monitoring.
However, non-waste fuels such as kerosene, gas oil or fuel oil can still be used without needing to comply with the IED.
